OAG, the world’s leading provider of digital flight information, this week released “on-time” data for all airports worldwide. From there, we collected data for the US airports with the most (and least) delays during August.
How airport delays are calculated
For clarity, the airport’s on-time performance It is calculated from the plane’s actual departure gate time at the departure airport and the flight’s scheduled landing time at the arrival airport.
If the actual arrival time is delayed by more than 15 minutes at the scheduled arrival airport, it will be officially marked as delayed. Flight cancellations are also included in the calculation.

Chicago Midway ranks highest for flight delays in August
Chicago Midway International Airport leads the list of US airport delays. The airport ranked 608 globally for flight delays in August and number one overall in the United States. Only 52.5% of flights leave on time.
Here are the five US airports with the worst on-time performance in August:
- Chicago Midway International Airport: 52.5% of flights depart on time.
- Baltimore Washington International Airport: 56.90% of flights depart on time.
- Dallas Love Field International Airport: 59.9% of on-time flights.
- Newark Liberty International Airport: The on-time departure rate in August was 64.5%.
- Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport: 65.3% of on-time flights.
6.7% Newark International Flight Cancellations
The airport with the highest cancellation rate on this list is Newark International Airport, 6.7% of flights were marked as canceled last monthdropped in the rankings for on-time performance.
