PORTAGE, IN — A Portage man was arrested after police said he gave chase with a stolen truck he used as a tool to break into his business.
Police were dispatched to Car-X Tire and Auto on U.S. Route 6 around 10:15 p.m. after concerned passers-by thought a pickup truck might have been stolen from there.
After following the direction the caller said the truck was heading, police found a nearby vehicle matching the caller’s description.
Portage police officers tried to stop the truck, but the driver sped up. As the truck crossed the tracks, it became airborne and landed about 150 feet north of the tracks.
Police said the truck then left the road and slammed into a telephone pole and four mailboxes before tumbling onto a roof.
The driver then got out of the car and fled.
Police K-9s were able to track the suspect under a pool deck in someone’s backyard on Niagara Avenue.
Police arrested the driver, 49-year-old Danny Lee Sloan.
When they investigated the Car-X site, investigators determined the business had been robbed and confirmed that a truck had been stolen from it.
Police believe Sloan used a truck to crash through the overhead bay door to gain access to the building. Once inside, he was reportedly seen on surveillance video breaking into a cash register and stealing money.
Investigators said they later found some of the money stolen along the route of the previous chase.
Sloan was preliminarily charged with burglary, auto theft, resisting arrest, DUI, criminal mischief, and eviction from the scene of the accident.
