The Apple Watch has evolved steadily since its debut in 2015, but the Apple Watch Ultra was announced at the same time.and , might be the biggest change of all. The watch arrives on his September 23rd, one week after his Watch Series 8.
Apple’s watch lineup is gradually expanding, much like the iPhone lineup. Apple has hitherto released only one watch a year, but with the Apple Watch SE comes a more affordable model. The Apple Watch Ultra goes in the opposite direction. More expensive, but unlike his previous fashion-driven Edition watches, the Ultra aims for function and durability. It’s also the largest Apple Watch in the lineup.
Next to the Apple Watch SE and Watch Series 8, the Ultra is like Apple’s version of the Casio G-Shock. The new design tucks the crown and side buttons into extended side pieces, and alongside the new watch’s larger case and curved flat display contours, it looks more like James Cameron than any previous Apple Watch.

The new watch has a titanium case, a sapphire flat front crystal, a 49mm case size, and a brighter display (2,000 nits). There’s a new dedicated second button for him, an improved speaker, and a clear, rugged design. It’s also the model that only Cellular comes in. There are many new features.
The Ultra’s biggest new feature, a significantly larger battery, hasn’t been seen since the Apple Watch debuted. A typical Apple Watch battery life is about a day and a half. Ultra promises more: 36 to 70 hours.
There’s also a new watch face called Wayfinder with additional readings for outdoor activities.
Even on my fat wrist, the Ultra still looks big. However, it’s not as heavy as you might think. The look, especially with the bold and function-oriented straps, is definitely bolder than I’m used to.
Last year, the much-anticipated redesign of the watch didn’t materialize, but Apple did increase the screen size of the watch. The Watch Ultra has a new look, with a flatter front and a bumped out side with a crown and side buttons, plus a new programmable he second button on the other side.
The buttons are easy to reach, but I’m not sure how I feel about the protruding Digital Crown. Wearing gloves and gear in the water seems to make it easier to access.
New straps include a wavy rubberized ocean band designed to fit over wetsuits, a lightweight, slightly stretchy trail loop like a refined version of the existing sport loop, and a variety of fittings. Includes an Alpine Loop nylon band with a titanium clasp that can be ratcheted into place. Everything seems to be designed for a specific sport. (Ocean bands are wild yellow.)
The redesigned Compass app looks a lot more fun. Especially since it allows zooming out to different scales, waypoints and walkback directions. Ultra’s GPS is enhanced with dual-frequency GPS (L1 and L5), which can be much more accurate than competing GPS smartwatches.
newwas also announced Wednesday, adding temperature sensing, more advanced motion tracking with car crash detection, and a low-power mode that can extend battery life by up to 36 hours on the standard model.
Who is Ultra for? Garmin’s watch-wearing market seems to be for people who want a dedicated running watch or a smartwatch that can get them through the weekend without recharging.
However, the extra cost means it’s not the watch of choice for most people. It could be an innovation that permeates the
The Ultra has some additional safety features, including a loud emergency siren that can be set to alert people if it goes down (not tested in Apple’s demo room). It is more water resistant and is WR100 and EN13319 certified for scuba diving.
There are some new apps for Ultra. The new Oceanic Plus dive app is made specifically for the Watch Ultra to check tides and water temperature. It also records dive depth and index. Apple has its own depth sensing app. The side buttons work to set waypoints underwater and are designed to be used while diving.
I’m neither a diver nor a hiker, but the Ultra’s battery life is what I envy most. I don’t know the performance yet..
